REMOVING BARRIERS TO STUDENT SUCCESS
Our mission is to remove systemic barriers facing underserved children and families through school- and community-based educational and wellness support.
Executive Summary:
Our organization, Bending Back Barriers, is committed to strengthening educational outcomes for children and teens of color in predominantly Black, low-income urban and rural communities in and around Philadelphia. Rather than centering our work on constructing new schools, our primary mission is to build, maintain, and expand partnerships with existing schools that serve at-risk student populations. Through these partnerships, we will provide direct classroom support, essential learning materials, nutritional assistance, and access to behavioral and emotional health services delivered by certified professionals.
The core of our work involves ensuring that partner schools have the resources they need to create stable, supportive, and fully equipped learning environments. This includes supplying classroom technology such as computers and tablets, expanding internet access for students without reliable connectivity at home, and offering clothing, hygiene supplies, and emergency essentials for students experiencing hardship. To address food insecurity, we will collaborate with schools to provide meals and nutritional support during and beyond the school day. Our certified counselors and partner clinicians will offer individual and group counseling, trauma-responsive services, and family support to meet the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students.
Our partnership model is designed to reinforce instructional quality, support teachers, and improve student performance through direct academic services, including tutoring, project-based learning materials, and enrichment programming. By integrating workforce readiness, STEM-based learning, and mentorship opportunities into partner schools, we aim to expand students’ access to viable career and post-secondary pathways. Our approach also includes wraparound supports such as after-school programming, resources for teen parents, and connections to family services that help stabilize the home environment.
Through these school-centered partnerships, our organization seeks to disrupt cycles of inequity characterized by low-wage employment, chronic unemployment, limited educational opportunity, and social instability. By providing coordinated academic, material, and wellness supports, we will help students build confidence, achieve academic success, and pursue fulfilling futures. Our long-term vision is a network of sustainable school partnerships that uplifts underserved communities and expand opportunities for generations to come.
